Priestly Benediction Pendant

From our friends at the Israel Miseum, the excavations at Ketef Hinom, overlooking the walls of the Old City, revealed part of the cemetery that served Jerusalem in the days of the First Temple. Discovered in one of the burial caves cut into the bedrock were two tiny silver scrolls incised with letters in ancient Hebrew script. The smaller plaque reads “The Lord bless thee and keep thee; the Lord make his face shine upon thee and give thee peace” – a text that is almost identical to the Priestly Benediction appearing in the Book of Numbers. The larger plaque bears a slightly different version of the same blessing. These verses are the oldest versions we know of, antedating the biblical fragments appearing in the Dead Sea Scrolls by some four hundred years.
