East-and-West Hanukkah Lamp (cast brass)
This Hanukkah lamp is based on one of the earliest European prototypes, which were made of cast bronze and were meant to be suspended on a wall or behind a door. Its intriguing design weds Eastern and Western elements: the central rosette evokes the stained-glass windows gracing the facade of European churches, while the row of horseshoe-shaped arches is typical of Islamic architecture. This combination of Western and Eastern styles characterized late medieval Spain.
