Mahjong

Mahjong, a traditional Chinese tile game, found a unique and lasting place in American Jewish culture starting in the 1930s and 1940s. After being introduced to the U.S. in the 1920s, the game gained popularity among Jewish women, particularly in suburban communities after World War II. It became a beloved social activity—often played in weekly games that blended fun, friendship, and routine. The National Mah Jongg League, founded by Jewish women in 1937, helped standardize American rules and raise funds for Jewish and other charities. Over generations, Mahjong evolved into more than just a game—it became a cherished ritual, a bridge between friends, and a symbol of Jewish-American domestic and cultural life.
